Nick Bauman named deputy political editor

I am pleased to announce that Nick Bauman, a talented journalist with extensive experience leading teams and promoting national politics coverage, will join the Post as deputy political editor.

As acting chief political editor, Nick will help guide national politics staff in executing ambitious coverage of the 2024 presidential campaign, White House, Congress and state politics across platforms.

Nick joins the Post after spending more than a decade editing political news, businesses and investigations. He has a sophisticated understanding of the current American political and digital media landscape and a unique reporting vision. He is committed to helping reporters and editors develop their talent, and has earned a reputation among his colleagues as an empathetic leader with a keen eye for story targets.

He most recently served as acting Washington bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, where he led coverage of the 2024 campaign and edited daily newspapers, corporate stories and features on Congress, the White House and the nation’s immigration detention system.

Previously, he was political editor at The Atlantic, where he was responsible for much of the magazine’s digital coverage of the 2020 election and the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. His team will discuss how Congressman Jamie Raskin lost his son ahead of the Capitol riot, what liberals misunderstand about Trump-supporting Latinos, and how the coronavirus We published an article about how one Colorado county turned into a national battleground.

Before joining The Atlantic, Nick was a senior corporate editor at Huffington Post. His novel won the Knight Award for Public Service in 2016 and the Writers Guild Award in 2017. His team’s report prompts Nevada prisons to stop using guns to control inmates, elicits FDA warning, and boasts of health benefits from injecting people with “young blood” This led to the closure of the company. He also oversaw an investigation into prison deaths that was shortlisted for the Livingstone Prize and launched his email newsletter, which grew to nearly 200,000 subscribers in its first year. Nick has also worked as a senior editor at Mother Jones and is a blogger at The Economist.
