Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s son says award given to Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch in her name is ‘desecration’ to her memory

CNN
—

The son of the late liberal Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Sunday that presenting an award named after his mother to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch was “a tribute to my mother.” It’s an insult to memory.”

“I don’t want to talk about what our other plans will be if the Foundation doesn’t see the wisdom in stopping and ending this desecration of our mother’s memory, but I can only say that we will continue to fight this. I’ll leave it to you,” Jim Ginsburg and Paula Reade said on “CNN Newsroom.”

Ginsburg’s family recently sent a letter to the Opperman Foundation, which is not affiliated with the award, slamming this year’s selection of nominees and asking it to remove her name from the award.

According to the foundation, the Ginsburg Award “honors leaders who have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in their chosen fields.” The award “has traditionally recognized outstanding women,” but this year it has been expanded to include men and women.

In addition to Musk and Murdoch, lifestyle icon Martha Stewart, actor Sylvester Stallone and investor Michael Milken are also the 2024 recipients. The 2023 recipient was Barbra Streisand.

Asked whether she would make an exception for the men currently included in the award, or for the recipients themselves, Jim Ginsburg said, “Well, you can argue about that, but, yeah, I don’t think it’s specific. You can debate the winners of the award, and you can debate the wisdom of each, but the two that clearly stand out here are Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch.

“When you think of trying to create a more just society, which of course was my mother’s ultimate goal, those last names probably come to mind,” he said.

“She would be appalled,” he later told Reed.

The Opperman Foundation did not respond to inquiries from CNN on Friday. CNN also reached out for comment on Jim Ginsburg’s interview Sunday night.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a longtime liberal high court member who died in 2020 at the age of 87, consistently cast progressive votes on major social issues such as abortion rights, same-sex marriage, and immigration. I cast it.

The Opperman Foundation says the 2024 honorees range from “pioneering innovators to veterans from a wide range of professions and industries.”

In a statement, the foundation said Stewart was on Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s “original wish list of potential recipients.” The group praised Musk’s “stratospheric accomplishments” and Murdoch as “media’s most iconic living legend.”

But Jim Ginsburg said the award winner doesn’t represent his mother.

“They are all things that she stood for in terms of people trying to make the world a better place, people striving for equality, a more inclusive world where everyone is treated with respect. I think people are mostly against it,” he added.

CNN’s Tierney Snead contributed to this report.
