Former Vice President Mike Pence said Friday that he “cannot in good conscience” support Republican nominee Donald Trump, expressing surprise for the former vice presidential candidate and the president he served with. It is a necessary negation.
“Donald Trump has pursued and articulated policies that are at odds with the conservative policies we have been under for four years. That is why, in good conscience, I will support Donald Trump in this campaign. I cannot support that,” Pence said on Fox News.
The former vice president suspended his support for the 2024 Republican primary after ending his presidential bid in October, although he had previously vowed to support the eventual Republican nominee. After Pence resigned, Trump said, “I chose him and I made him vice president. I chose him. I made him vice president.” He said that it should be supported. But…people in politics can be very dishonest. ”
Pence said he was “incredibly proud” of the Trump-Pence administration’s accomplishments, but cited Trump’s stance on abortion and the U.S. national debt and reversal of his comments on TikTok, saying the former president was a conservative. He claimed to have distanced himself from the issue.
“During the presidential campaign, I made it clear that there are significant differences between me and President Trump on a variety of issues. And our differences regarding the constitutional duty that I exercised on January 6th. It’s not just that,” Pence said on “The Story with Martha McCallum.”
“As I watched his candidacy unfold, I watched him walk away from our promise to tackle the national debt. I watched him walk away from our commitment to the sanctity of human life. “And last week, we reversed our hardline stance on China and supported my administration’s efforts to force ByteDance to sell TikTok.”
Pence did not say who he would vote for in the 2024 general election, saying, “My vote is with me.” But he said he would “never vote” for President Joe Biden. Mr. Pence also indicated that he would not support third-party candidates.
Pence broke with his boss on January 6, 2021, as he ceremonially oversaw Congress’ certification of Biden’s victory over his decision not to overturn the 2020 election results. Mr. Pence later spoke of Mr. Trump’s “reckless words” that day, when a crowd of Trump supporters violently assaulted him. They invaded the U.S. Capitol and “endangered” their families and others inside the U.S. Capitol.
During last year’s presidential election, Pence warned Republicans about the “siren song of populism” from Trump and his imitators.
Mr. Pence and his group Advancing American Freedom recently announced a $20 million commitment to advance conservative policies.
