JSW Steel, one of India’s fastest growing steel companies, recently announced the next step in its growth plans. In a major steel news event, JSW Steel Italia SRL has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Italian government to restart production operations at the Piombino plant through an investment of 140 million euros.
according to JSW Steel, this initiative includes doubling the Piombino facility’s current rail manufacturing capacity to 600,000 tons per year. Analysts expect this strategic move to reduce imports and boost local employment opportunities. Specifically, investment injections continue to be directed towards improving efficiency and modernizing railway factories. Currently planned activities include the installation of a tandem mill, the installation of a head curing facility and the extension of the rail length from 108 meters to 120 meters.
Many hope that the memorandum will not only help reignite steel production, but also protect existing job opportunities and ease the flow of steel imports into Italy. Based on its provisions, the company specified a cooperation period of four months to conclude the program agreement.

Additionally, the renewal memorandum highlights the company’s commitment to partnering with the Italian government’s efforts in regional growth and economic development. Experts believe that this new initiative will establish the Piombino railway factory as the most modern and technologically advanced railway factory in Europe. The move will also accelerate domestic steel production and reduce Italy’s dependence on imports of steel products.

JSW Steel first came to Italy in 2018 in search of business. Shortly thereafter, he announced the acquisition of Aferpi SpA, Piombino Logistics SpA and GSI Lucchini SpA for 55 million euros. Aferpi specializes in manufacturing special long steel products such as rails, wire rods and bars. At that time, the company had an incredible annual production capacity, with a railway factory capable of producing 320,000 tons.
Additionally, the company’s steel bar mill had a production capacity of 400,000 tons and wire rod capacity of 600,000 tons. Piombino Logistics, whose main responsibility is overseeing the infrastructure within Piombino’s port area, also manages 42 kilometers of railway lines within the factory site.
Geopolitical predicament created unexpected business challenges
Many expected the Group to have a presence in Italy and thereby establish a European specialty long steel product. JSW Steel shows bullish strength
JSW Steel looks set to embark on its next phase of expansion within India, increasing its total production capacity to 38.5 million tonnes per annum by FY25. The company recently announced that it will invest in a multi-million dollar integrated steel complex consisting of a steel mill and steel mill. The production capacity in Odisha state in eastern India is 13.2MTPA.
Notably, JSW Steel recently formed a 50:50 joint venture with Japan’s JFE Steel Corporation to produce grain-oriented electrical steel sheets in Karnataka. In a separate development, JSW Group has announced plans to invest millions of dollars in a comprehensive electric vehicle and EV battery manufacturing venture in Odisha. The company currently expects this ambitious project to create more than 11,000 job opportunities.
