A husband-and-wife duo who have made a fortune in AI investing and cryptocurrency trading have quietly emerged as one of the biggest backers of a major underground financial group boosting President Joe Biden.
The second-largest donation in 2022 to the nonprofit arm of Future Forward, the main super PAC supporting Biden, came from a group run by James McCrave and Emily Berger. The couple worked at Jane Street, a trading company in Manhattan, and McCrave was an early investor in the AI company Anthropic.
The tax records reviewed by CNN have not been previously reported, but the BEMC 4 association, a nonprofit organization whose only two executives are McCrave and Berger, will give Future Forward USA Action $7.2 million in 2022. Tax records do not confirm whether the $7.2 million came from Mr. McClave and Mr. Berger individually or from other donors to groups they control. Although Mr. McClave and Mr. Berger have little public profile, they have been quietly increasing their political spending. The Biden campaign did not respond to requests for comment.
In addition to supporting Future Forward, McClave and Berger’s nonprofit donated an additional $7 million to the Voter Information Center in 2022.
