Analysis: Biden vs. Trump is decided. What are the alternatives?

A rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump has become a presumed reality, as the president and former president both dominated in the Republican and Democratic primaries on Super Tuesday.

Both candidates’ shortcomings, overall unpopularity, and deep-rooted perceptions suggest that the next election will be one of mutually assured destruction, with Republicans trying to make Biden look as old and weak as possible and Democrats trying to make Trump look as old and weak as possible. sees a second term as the end of democracy. As we know.

What are the alternatives? If 2024 is anything like 2020 (and 2016, for that matter), Republican or Democratic winners will outperform losers in a handful of key states. That means third-party or independent candidates, even if they have little chance of winning. It could play a key role in determining the outcome of a closely contested election.

third party: In recent elections, the Libertarian Party has been on the ballot in every state. The Green Party is typically on the ballot in most, but not all, states. Although these parties have not traditionally attracted large followings, they receive tens of thousands of votes in key states each year in close elections, leading to much speculation.

Independent candidates: This year has a different kind of wild card than 2020, when rapper Kanye West ran for president. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has a famous name, a political career, and a deep pocket of supporters to help him get on the November ballot as an independent. Academic and social justice advocate Cornel West also ran as an independent and formed a new party, Justice for All.

No label: Frustrated with the major political parties, No Labels was formed as a centrist group rather than a political party and began pushing for votes for an unknown “unity” candidate. At least for now, no such candidate has emerged. Labels members are not scheduled to vote this week on whether to seek a candidate.
