Léa Seydoux is a superstar in her native France, who has gone on to success in Hollywood with series such as James Bond (Spectre and No Time to Die) and Dune (she has She made her debut as Mrs. Margot Fenring in “Part 2” and will likely return for a third film if it moves forward). But Seydoux recently told Harper’s Bazaar UK that it’s much easier to become a female actor in Europe than in America.
“I think the American industry is tough on women,” Seydoux said. “It’s hard for women to get older. You don’t want to be afraid of being unwanted or losing a contract. In America, economics is important, and when it comes to making money, you lose your freedom. Check all the boxes. I’m not happy with the fact that I have to let them in. In Europe, it’s easier for women to appear on screen.”
“I’m a European actress so I have more freedom and that suits me,” Seydoux continued. “I’m not trying to be popular, I’m just trying to enjoy myself. In America, you have to conform. I don’t want to adapt myself to the system, I want the system to adapt to me. I want it!”
Seydoux added, “It’s hard for someone who isn’t completely American to star in a Hollywood movie,” and when it comes to roles in major studio tentpoles, “I’ll take whatever I get.” The actor told IndieWire in 2022 that one of the reasons he enjoyed coming to Hollywood to make movies was because “I feel like people have more imagination in America.”
“I got offered a movie that was so far away from what I’ve done before, and I thought, ‘Oh my gosh.’ Interesting.’ I love feeling like I can adapt myself. For me, that’s It’s very exotic,” she added at the time. “I make the movies I want to see. That’s the only way I would choose.”
Seydoux points out that many actors often talk about the limited roles available to women as they get older in the industry. ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Fair Play’ star Phoebe Dynevor recently made headlines when she told the London Evening Standard that she was noticing acting opportunities for her peers drying up. Dynevor is only 28 years old.
“I’ve read some great scripts recently. I probably shouldn’t say this, but there aren’t that many parts going yet,” Dynevor said. “There’s so much space for male actors… There are so many male actors. And they’re all great. They’re all very talented young people. And they don’t stop working. And they… That’s very good.”
“But, when you think about girls my age… there’s more room.” [male actors] We still don’t have enough room,” she continued. “It’s a really good time for older women, which is great, and a lot for younger men, but it’s not a very good time for actresses my age that I know.”
Seydoux is currently starring in Warner Bros.’ Dune: Part 2, now in theaters nationwide.
