Nikki Haley won the Republican primary in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, marking her first victory after consecutive losses to former President Donald J. Trump.
She received about 63% of the vote to Trump’s 33%, securing all 19 available delegates and becoming the first woman to win a Republican presidential primary, according to the Associated Press.
The election campaign was small. Just over 2,000 Republicans voted in overwhelmingly Democratic Washington, compared to 110,000 in Iowa, 325,000 in New Hampshire and 757,000 in South Carolina.
Haley also seems to have acknowledged this in her post on X. “Thank you, DC!” she wrote. “We will fight from every angle.”
She also tried to play the symbolism of Washington (not necessarily a Republican favorite) to her advantage. write“Republicans closest to the dysfunction in Washington know that Donald Trump has brought nothing but chaos and division for the past eight years.”
Trump’s press secretary, Caroline Leavitt, said in a statement: “Nicki has been roundly rejected across the country, only to be crowned queen of the swamp by lobbyists and D.C. insiders seeking to protect the broken status quo. ” he said. ”
The campaign will now move to the 15 states that will hold Republican contests on Super Tuesday, March 5th. It’s still mathematically impossible for Trump to clinch the nomination, but a strong performance on Super Tuesday could bring him a lot closer. I plan to do so within the next few weeks.
