Watch Biden and Trump’s border speech on immigration and the election

One man walked along the road and looked out over tall shrubbery, later saying the country needed “a new efficient and fair process for the government to consider asylum claims.” There’s another man 300 miles away. He walked along a dirt road surrounded by razor wire and later said a “vicious violation of our country” was already underway.

The potential of the immigration issue in the run-up to the November election was made clear Thursday as Presidents Biden and Donald Trump flew to separate parts of the U.S. southern border.

It also showcased the first true split-screen moment, giving American voters a chance to directly compare the two very different policies, arguments and styles of the leading presidential candidates.

Biden arrived in Brownsville, Texas, where he met with federal Border Patrol agents and local law enforcement officials. He wore a baseball cap, a buttoned suit jacket and an open-collared shirt as he walked along a section of the border, where officials pointed out where people had crossed into the country.

There was no immediate sense of danger or urgency about the border situation in Biden’s scene.

President Trump’s visit to another city along the U.S.-Mexico border was the opposite.

The former president, wearing a blue suit and long red tie, met with Border Patrol agents and Texas National Guard members and gave them a tour of that part of the border. At one point, Trump walked past what appeared to be a wall of razor wire and a parade of military vehicles.

Television cameras captured Biden speaking with officials inside the Border Patrol station in Brownsville. The room was decorated with American flags, and on one wall was a sign that partially read “Oath.”

A source briefed on Biden spoke of the challenge of “dealing with the surge in families, minors, and adults entering the United States.” “Smugglers are taking advantage of vulnerable people and individuals,” the official said. There was also talk of the need for more technology and personnel to help detect weapons and drugs at the border.another person Biden spoke about how he has “tried to be very creative” in dealing with the overwhelming number of asylum claims filed.

Trump, on the other hand, received a completely different press conference at Eagle Pass.

Inside a large white tent, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas) pointed to a photo and told President Trump, “Joe Biden is tempting, if not forcing, them to come here.” Told. One of the people in the green uniform who briefed President Trump inside the tent can be heard talking about the dangers posed by immigrants, even though crime data shows the threat is relatively low. Ta.

According to this person, thousands of people “entered the country on parole” and “went to Georgia and murdered nursing students.” ““Go to New York and beat up a cop on the street,” or “Go to Louisiana and rape a 14-year-old girl.”

Inside the Brownsville room, Biden focused on the people working hard at the border and the people in Washington who make it difficult.

Biden praised the work of Border Patrol agents, immigration and asylum officials. “They’re all doing a great job under really tough circumstances,” Biden said. And the solution to this problem, he said, is the bill that House Republicans are blocking. He argued that the bipartisan border deal that Biden mentioned included desperately needed funding. “This is the toughest border security reform this country has ever seen,” Biden said. He added: “This contract allows us to employ one person.”,500 border patrols added, 1,Between the additional 500 police officers and the ports of entry. ”

In Eagle Pass, Mr. Trump stood outside with the heavily guarded Rio Grande behind him and said the country was in danger from the people on the other side of all its amenities. “They’re coming from prison, they’re coming from prison, they’re coming from mental hospitals,” President Trump falsely said. “They are terrorists from a mental hospital. They are being allowed into our country.”

President Trump also sought to distinguish people crossing the border from other people. From everything in the United States, “languages are coming into our country. We don’t even have people who speak those languages.”

The comment was reminiscent of racist attacks he made against Mexicans at the start of his 2015 presidential campaign. “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not doing their best,” he said at the time. “They’re sending people with a lot of problems, and they’re bringing those problems to us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re bringing rape. A person.”

Biden ultimately turned his attention directly to Trump. At the time, Biden urged lawmakers to “stop playing politics” on the border issue and urged them to pass bipartisan legislation. House Republicans opposed the bill after President Trump publicly called for it.

“So instead of playing politics with this issue, why don’t we just come together and solve it?” Biden said. “Let’s remember who we’re working for. We’re not working for Democrats or Republicans, we’re working for the American people. We’re working for the American people.” he said, concluding with the bipartisan message he delivered during the 2020 presidential election.

Trump, on the other hand, brought up Biden’s name only to frame him as part of the problem.

President Trump said, “America is being overrun by Mr. Biden’s immigration crimes.” “This is a new form of vicious violation of our country. It’s an immigration crime,” President Trump said. “We’re calling it Biden’s immigration crime. But it’s a little long so I’ll leave it at that.”
