Google has implemented an open source libdav1d decoder to improve video streaming even on older devices that don’t support hardware AV1.

Google is currently testing its AV1 video encoder in the beta version of Android 14, which is used by popular video streaming platforms such as YouTube, Netflix, and Instagram. However, due to lack of hardware, most smartphones still use h.264 or h265 codecs, which are not as efficient as AV1 in terms of video playback performance.

But just last year, major chip makers like Qualcomm and Apple started including hardware-accelerated AV1 encoders in their flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and A17 Pro processors. A future update will allow you to stream video more efficiently, even on devices that don’t have hardware AV1 acceleration. This update is likely to hit devices in March 2024 via a Google Play system update, where libgav1 will be replaced with the more efficient libdav1d, the following report suggests.
