The University of California, Riverside’s College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences will present lectures on climate change, cosmology, and sustainability as part of its annual science lecture series.

The series begins March 5 with a presentation titled “The Escalating Climate Crisis” by climatology professor Robert Allen.
Mr. Allen will discuss global warming, which is widespread and intensifying as the past decade has been the hottest decade on record. He talks about how and why our climate is changing and what we need to do to avoid climate catastrophe.
The second lecture on April 30th will feature Nobel Prize winner Barry Barish, a distinguished professor of physics and astronomy. His lectures will cover cosmology, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), gravitational waves, and the collapse of black holes.
On the same day, an event will be held to celebrate Barish’s receipt of the National Medal of Science, America’s highest scientific honor. Barish was honored by President Biden at the White House in October for his groundbreaking research on subatomic particles.
The series concludes on May 14 with a presentation on “From Soil to Data: Accurate Insights for Sustainable Agricultural Systems” by Elia Scudiello, a research agronomist in the School of Environmental Sciences.

His lecture will address the issues of water scarcity and environmental degradation that threaten food production. Mr. Scudiello will discuss his research using field measurements, near-ground and remote sensing, and spatiotemporal multiscale data analysis to improve irrigation practices to sustain future agricultural systems.
This popular science lecture series, now in its 15th year, is free and open to the public and campus community. Over the years, the Science Lecture Series has covered important and timely topics such as food security, sustainability, climate change, the search for extraterrestrial life, gene editing, and COVID-19.
Allen’s talk will be held at the UCR Palm Desert Center on March 5th at 6pm. Barish will be held at the University Theater on campus on April 30th at 6pm. And the Scudiero will be held at the UCR Palm Desert Center on May 14 at 6 p.m.A reception will be held prior to each event from 5 p.m.
