Kaspersky Lab has released its annual analysis of the mobile threat landscape, revealing an alarming 52% increase in attacks against mobile devices in 2023 compared to the previous year. The report, launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, highlights the increasing risks faced by mobile users around the world.
According to the report, the number of mobile attacks surged to nearly 33.8 million in 2023, a significant increase from the previous year’s numbers. Among the several threats detected, adware is the most prevalent, accounting for 40.8% of all threats identified. Notably, the UK saw 258,929 mobile attacks during the same period.
Although the number of banking Trojan installation packages has decreased, attacks using mobile bankers remain steady. In particular, Kaspersky found that he installed over 1.3 million malicious packages, of which 154,000 included his Mobile Banking Trojan.
According to Kaspersky Lab, cybercriminals employ a variety of tactics to distribute mobile threats, infiltrating official and unofficial app stores. Malicious applications have been observed infiltrating Google Play, and fake investment apps are commonly disguised as such. Additionally, malicious WhatsApp and Telegram mods aimed at stealing user data were identified as a prevalent attack vector.

“The surge in Android malware and riskware activity throughout 2023 marks an alarming change after a period of relative calm,” said Anton Kiba, mobile security expert at Kaspersky Lab. has commented.
“By the end of the year we will have reached levels reminiscent of early 2021, and this rise highlights the significant threats facing our users. This means we must remain vigilant to protect ourselves from evolving cyber threats. This is a stark reminder of the importance of having robust security measures in place.”
