I used one of the most ridiculous Android smartphones of 2024

The Tecno Pova 6 Pro has a cheeky name, a dull green color, and an equally free design. This is definitely the craziest looking smartphone announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, and we haven’t even begun to mention its crazy features yet.

I spent a long weekend with the Tecno Pova 6 Pro. You’ll probably never buy this phone, but it’s definitely one you should know about. It captured my heart in a way I never expected.

Crazy and mad design of techno

Techno will continue to be a brand that fascinates us. Although the company doesn’t sell devices in the US, its journey with the brand started with the Phantom X2 Pro and its unusual pop-out camera and continued with the Phantom V Fold and Phantom V Flip. You can buy both for less than the price of one of his Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5s. The Tecno Pova 6 Pro isn’t at the same technological level as these phones, but that doesn’t mean it’s boring. In fact, quite the opposite.

The color of the phone in the photo is Comet Green, but it’s actually very green. You can also get meteorite gray, but why buy it when green is so eye-catching? It’s not just the colors, patterns, and shine that make a design special. The giant camera module also has a series of mini LEDs that, like the Nothing Phone 2, activate when you receive a call or notification and display the battery charge level. Mini LED can also be linked with popular LEDs. PUBG A game to add some flair.

These aren’t as bright or customizable as the Nothing Phone 2’s Glyph lights, but it’ll be interesting to see if this phone helps take over the Nothing Phone 2a in the near future. The back of the Pova 6 Pro is infuriating in other less interesting ways. It’s prone to lots of fingerprints and has various phrases like “NFC” and “High Density Battery” plastered on its surface, which makes the phone look cheap. This is not due to the sticky slickness of the plastic used for the back panel. chassis.

There’s more craziness in the chassis and box. The Pova 6 Pro has a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom, which is admittedly a rarity these days, but inside the box you’ll find something we haven’t seen in a long time: wired in-ear headphones. I said this is different from every other cell phone out there at the moment.

One of the largest batteries I’ve ever seen

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The materials used in the Tecno Pova 6 Pro suggest the phone’s low-midrange status, but Tecno has packed a whopping 6,000mAh battery into this slim and lightweight phone. Will the abnormal battery life return? I started using his Pova 6 Pro fully charged on Friday night and ignored the charger until the battery died. After a five-and-a-half hour runtime and mixed use over the weekend, it finally expired at 4pm on Monday. A 70-watt wired charger is included and it took about 15 minutes to reach 50% and less than 45 minutes to reach 100%.

This is probably not the case This is completely insane. Battery life is longer, but still pretty impressive. Pova 6 Pro’s modest specifications allow you to make the most of its capacity. The screen is a 6.78-inch AMOLED with FHD resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, and one of the worst auto brightness modes I’ve ever encountered. Annoyed by the long response time and preference for almost complete dimness, I turned it off. MediaTek 6080 processor and 12GB of RAM provide adequate power and playback Asphalt 9: Legend This proved to be no problem.

Tecno has updated its HiOS Android interface with the installation of Android 14, offering a far better experience than any Tecno phone you’ve ever used. Less bloatware, fewer pointless apps and widgets preloaded on your home screen, and faster speeds. It’s not perfect. The split notification shade is annoying and the face and fingerprint unlock system is too slow. But it’s reliable and has a much cleaner, classic Android design than I expected. There’s also Apple’s own take on his Dynamic Island called Dynamic Port 2.0, which works very well.

A camera with surprisingly missing features

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

What about the camera? The Pova 6 Pro appears to have three cameras and an LED flash on the back. One thing you can see, displayed for everyone to see on the back panel, is the 108-megapixel main camera. That means the other two will be a wide-angle camera and an expected 2MP macro lens. mistaken. The Pova 6 Pro doesn’t have a wide-angle camera at all, which makes it stand out from almost every other phone released in the past few years.

Surprisingly, I don’t miss the wide-angle camera. Given the status of the Pova 6 Pro, it would have been a pretty average camera anyway. So I had no qualms about being able to take a mediocre wide-angle photo that I’ll probably never see again. So what are his other two cameras? Great question. In the specifications he mentions a 108MP camera and that’s it. When I checked with Techno, they revealed that, as expected, one is a 2MP camera with a fixed focus, and the other is an “AI camera” that collects ambient light.

The quality of the photos varies greatly. At its best, it’s only average, with no stabilization. I also have trouble focusing on objects that are reasonably close, and although the Pova 6 Pro’s camera also has an “in-sensor” zoom feature with a 3x shortcut available in the app, the results are irritating. It almost never happens. Photos taken in low light also have a lot of noise. There are some special features, including a dual video mode that lets you shoot with the front and rear cameras simultaneously, and an editing mode that changes the look of the sky in your photos. The Pova 6 Pro’s design makes the camera seem like the standout feature, but that’s all its faults, and it’s crazy that they went through so much trouble to make this look special.

Crazy and fun, but needs refinement

dynamic port 2.0

Tecno Nova 6 Pro is everywhere In a strangely endearing way. The funky design sets it apart, the software is surprisingly good, and the battery lasts several days with average usage. It also has an IP53 water and dust resistance rating, as well as wired and wireless support for Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio. But my complaints are that it’s full of fingerprints, the camera is mysterious, basic features like the fingerprint sensor and automatic brightness adjustment are slow and unreliable, and there’s no always-on display.

Still, for all its good and bad points, I like the Tecno Pova 6 Pro. Much of this is due to software improvements. It makes a big difference when it doesn’t feel like it’s resisting, as it did with Tecno’s previous versions of his HiO. Instead, after spending a little time customizing it to my liking, it has settled into a solid companion. I immediately felt more comfortable with Tecno’s HiOS than Xiaomi’s MIUI, even if it wasn’t quite as slick and feature-packed.

What the Pova 6 Pro needs is an improvement, as many of the basic features are hit-or-miss. We’d love to see a Tecno phone with a more capable processor inside to provide additional performance. I’m enjoying the Tecno Pova 6 Pro, and as such it’s a bit of a recommendation. I continue to like what the company is doing, but unless you can stomach a poor camera and all the other craziness, this isn’t a phone you should rush out to buy.

Techno came to MWC with many other even crazier products, including an AI robot dog and some really wild concept material.
