Atheist Richard Dawkins recently appeared in ‘X’ called out “Once was great” scientific american Because he denied that “sex is a true binary opposite.” His tweet (or X, or whatever it’s called now) was in response to a 2019 article titled “Stop using bogus science to justify transphobia.” The author, a man who claims the pronouns “she/they,” says, “The common belief that gender arises solely from chromosomal structure is incorrect. The truth is that your biological sex is not carved in stone, but a living system with the potential for change.”
The authors use examples such as chromosomal abnormalities, intersex disorders, and the apparent similarities between transgender and opposite-sex brains to prove that sex, like gender, is actually on a “spectrum.”
[T]The science is clear and conclusive. Sex is not binary and transgender people are real. …Trans experiences provide important insights into the science of sexuality and provide scientific evidence that rare and atypical phenomena are essential to the success of living systems. …Transgender humans embody the complexity and diversity that are fundamental features of life, evolution, and nature itself. That’s a fact.
In fact, the idea that a person can be “born in the wrong body” has been a central claim of transgender theory advocates since its inception. Of course, this assumes that the “right body” is not a physically healthy body, but one that matches someone’s “gender” identity. Moreover, if there is a conflict between one’s body and one’s sense of self, then the problem is the body and it needs to be changed through hormonal therapy or surgical intervention.
The distinction between inside and outside, so to speak, is crucial to transgender claims that fully anatomically male men should be able to compete in women’s sports and enter women’s locker rooms. After all, it is said that it is what is inside that makes a person a woman. However, this distinction is blurred by gender activists, like this author, who believe that biological sex is “assigned at birth” and that, like gender, it is non-binary. In other words, subjectivity regarding gender is becoming subjectivity regarding sex.
This means that doctors who announce in the delivery room, “It’s a boy” or “It’s a girl,” are imposing an identity on children. But if a body’s gender is subjectively “assigned”, how can a person be “born in the wrong body”? Why should we undergo invasive and irreversible “treatments” to change our bodies to be like any other body that has simply been “assigned” the opposite sex? Furthermore, in this way of thinking, how can there be such a thing as “the opposite sex”?
in his pathetic postNew atheist and Oxford biologist Richard Dawkins called out this confusion about sex.
This ridiculous article (a disgrace to the once great Scientific American) ignorantly misunderstands the essence of the gender binary… Gender is determined by chromosomes, anatomy, psychology and sociology. It is neither defined by personal tendencies nor by “assignment at birth”, but depends on the size of the gametes. It happens to be embryologically determined by mammalian chromosomes…but it is universally defined by the binary distinction between sperm and egg. You can argue about “gender” if you want (biologists have better things to do), but sex is a true dualism, one of the few in biology that is fairly rare.
In a later post In response to people who asked about intersex people, Dawkins pointed out that biological disabilities do not disprove normal biological facts. He writes that the birth of a baby without legs “does not negate the claim that Homo sapiens is a bipedal species.”
This distinction between how the body functions and how it breaks down comes straight out of Christian books on the subject. But here it is from one of the notorious “knights” of New Atheism and a fierce opponent of Christianity. Dawkins famously called belief in God a “delusion.” But watching this exchange, one wonders how he feels about an actual delusion being unleashed on a society that has all but rejected God.
Of course, Dawkins is right.men and women teeth Reality and binary, unalienable truths that can be recognized by science, taught in the Bible, and written into creation. Denying the reality and relevance of sexual bodies, as trans activists do, is deeply anti-scientific. It is remarkable that even scientists who are famous for denying the God who made us male and female understand this.
