Gboard’s handy text scanning tool is now widely available

[ad_1]

summary

  • Gboard’s Scan Text feature is rolling out to users, making it easier to capture text using the camera.
  • Users can copy text directly from images through Gboard, eliminating the need to switch between different apps like Google Lens.
  • This isn’t an entirely new concept, as Samsung keyboards have previously allowed users to scan content using the camera.

Gboard comes by default on most Android smartphones and is comfortably one of our favorite keyboard apps. There have been quite a few Gboard-related updates lately, and some beta features like seamless voice typing are now showing up on the keyboard as well. Similarly, back in November, Gboard beta 13.6 added a minor but very useful addition. scan text Option to use camera. Google has now started rolling out this particular feature for his Gboard users in some regions.

The Scan Text option was spotted by one of our tipsters a few days ago, and later Android expert Mishaal Rahman corroborated the news of the option’s arrival on X/Twitter. Rahman also provided detailed screenshots of this feature using the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Scan Text seems to be widespread, but it’s currently missing from my boyfriend’s Android phone, even after switching from stable to beta version of Gboard.

Scanning text is a valuable addition to Gboard, especially for individuals who frequently use services like Google Lens to scan text via their phone’s camera. Activating Scan Text turns the bottom area of the screen into a viewfinder and uses the shutter key to capture images. Users can tap the screen to copy part or all of the text, put in Click the button and paste it into the text field.

Samsung keyboards have offered the same text scanning feature since One UI 5, so it’s worth remembering that Google isn’t the first to introduce this particular feature to keyboards. Nevertheless, Gboard users will appreciate the inclusion of text scanning functionality. You’ll have to go back and forth between different apps, like Google Lens, to scan images with text.

In related Gboard news, the team is also working on improving its AI proofing tools by allowing users to selectively proofread only parts of text instead of entire paragraphs. Like the Scan Text feature, this proofing tool is not yet available to all users, but it has been available in the beta channel for several months.

thank you: Moshe
