I’m a long-time Android user who migrated from the venerable iPhone 4S to the Samsung Galaxy S6 in 2015. Since then, I have used some of the best Android smartphones.
So what I thought would be a little flirtation with iOS and the iPhone 13 Pro at the end of 2021 actually turned into a committed relationship with Apple smartphones. Sure, I still have access to things like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, but my boyfriend’s SIM card (which I still use in the UK) is in my iPhone.
Lately, Android variations and general iPhone boredom have almost led me back to Google’s smartphone platform, but just when I thought I was done, the iPhone 15 Pro Max pulled me back in. .
It’s a great flagship-grade smartphone, so I’m okay with that. However, this may be a little too good to be true. I don’t have a clear idea whether the phone is likely to go any further than just an iterative upgrade of the previous generation.
But first, let me tell you why the iPhone 15 Pro Max captures my attention even though I’m not really into Max smartphones.
The sum of its tweaks
First of all, the titanium construction is a game-changer, turning a phone with a 6.7-inch display that can be heavy and unwieldy into a device that can be used almost with one hand. And by making subtle adjustments to the sides and adding some curvature to the edges, the iPhone 15 Pro Max retains the smooth flat edges that Apple brought back with the iPhone 12 series, making it slightly more comfortable to hold. I am. The matte finish on the back of the phone and the way the color blends with the titanium chassis is also very pretty.
Dynamic Island isn’t perfect, but it’s a welcome departure from the notch I was grudgingly accustomed to on the iPhone 13 Pro. It also feels less intrusive than the punch-hole cameras found on Android rivals like the Google Pixel 8 Pro. Moreover, the added functionality will be appreciated, even if you cannot always use it to its full potential.
I also like the new action buttons. This can be used to quickly activate the “torch” or rear camera flash. USB-C connectivity is welcome. And I still love his 1Hz to 120Hz screen with Apple’s ProMotion display. Combined with sophisticated software, the iPhone 15 Pro Max feels extremely fast.
Of course, it’s powered by the A17 Pro chip, which means it’s incredibly fast and allows you to run console-quality games on a device that fits much more in your pocket than the Xbox Series X. There is room to improve performance to make these games run a little more comfortably. But with all the features Apple Arcade has to offer, you’ll have no trouble finding great games to play during your boring commute.
Finally, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s camera suite is impressive. The move to a 5x telephoto optical zoom lens adds the much-lauded flexibility to the camera system, allowing both the main camera and the ultra-wide camera to consistently capture great photos time and time again. I support the decision to put the Galaxy S24 Ultra at the top of TechRadar’s list of best camera phones, but I prefer Apple’s computational photography and image signal processing over Samsung’s.
The video is truly class-leading and it’s very easy to record usable footage, even if you have the camera skills of a stupid dog.
I’ve always opposed Apple and its love of pandering to its devices and felt that Cupertino was condoning something that people would be crucified for losing their Android smartphones. What I’m talking about is his standard iPhone 15’s 60Hz display and adoption of glacially slow USB-C. However, I cannot defend the standard model or his iPhone 15 Plus, but I believe that the iPhone 15 Pro Max is almost the pinnacle of smartphones at the moment.
Where do we go from here?
The problem is that given all this, I fear that Apple has little room left for further innovation. Indeed, Tim Cook’s staff will no doubt follow in the footsteps of Google and Samsung and embrace generative AI tools. And it’s not hard to predict that models like the iPhone 16 will be faster and have longer battery life than before, perhaps with the addition of decent fast charging as well.
But in terms of the big changes happening to the iPhone, and indeed Samsung’s Galaxy series, it feels like we’ve hit a plateau in smartphone evolution and innovation, at least on the hardware side.
I remember a time when cameras were getting better and better, each generation was more focused on performance, added all sorts of new features, and each new smartphone felt like a real step up from the previous one. is old enough to Nowadays, one generation of mobile phone is almost the same as the previous one.
Indeed, the small changes I made to the iPhone 15 Pro Max have made it my favorite phone and one worth upgrading to. But now I feel like Apple has nailed that formula. I don’t think the iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 are much better. That is, unless someone comes up with a drastically different screen technology or battery material.
So, am I tired of the phone yet? Well, not completely. I think Apple has the vision and knowledge to deliver a great flip phone experience, so I think my hopes for an exciting iPhone are pinned on the promise of a foldable iPhone. Similarly, I’m keen to embrace the software side of innovation, and there’s no doubt that AI will play a role.
But for now, I have to console myself with the thought that I have a phone that is close to perfect for me at the moment. And when everything seems bleak, that’s not a bad thing.
