Little League® International mourns the passing of Waldemar Szymanski, a longtime Little League volunteer and one of the first champions of Little League in Poland and the entire Europe-Africa region.
Mr. Szymanski, a native of Kutno, Poland, helped found and register the Polish Baseball and Softball Federation in 1978. The federation continues to operate today. He held various positions in the Federation, including General Secretary.
“Waldemar was a great friend to Little League,” said Beata Kasba-Baker, Little League Regional Director for Europe and Africa. “He promoted Little League programs in Poland and in national federations throughout Europe. Mr. Szymanski was instrumental in securing Poland’s first Little League program in 1989. He hosted a ceremony in Warsaw where incumbent US President George HW Bush handed over the certificate of establishment of Poland’s first Little League.
As Little League International considered various locations for the European Leadership Training Center, Szymanski was a passionate advocate for bringing the project to Kutno, his hometown and the birthplace of Polish baseball. did.
Mr. Szymanski is widely known as one of the founders of organized baseball and softball in Poland.
