What you need to know
- Google released Gemini as an alternative to Google Assistant, but the AI-based helper lacks some key voice assistant features.
- You can now set reminders via Gemini using the Assistant extension.
- Gemini still doesn’t allow you to set reminders natively and is completely missing some important voice assistant features.
Google is fully committed to Gemini, and there are plenty of signs that the company is thinking about Gemini as an eventual replacement for Google Assistant. The only problem is that the current Gemini app lacks significant voice assistant functionality, forcing users to choose between Gemini and the Assistant.
But Google has been steadily improving Gemini, and just added some useful Assistant features to the app. As spotted by a Redditor on the Google Pixel subreddit, Gemini can now set reminders on Android (via Android Police ). At least, it’s possible.
When you ask the Gemini app to set a reminder on Android, it automatically loads the Google Assistant extension inside the Gemini window. The specified reminder will then be created in Google Tasks. Eventually, users will be able to open the Google Tasks app and make further changes.
It’s hard to call this implementation of reminders in Gemini native, but it works. Google may follow a similar path to adding other Assistant-based tasks to Gemini using Assistant extensions. Currently, the biggest feature missing from Gemini is support for media playback queries and Google Assistant his routines.
It’s probably only a matter of time before Gemini gains more voice assistant features, but that means Gemini and Assistant are currently in a complicated situation. The situation gets even more complicated as Google is testing a large number of features in different regions. The experience of using Gemini on one device in one region can be very different than in another region.
In fact, it appears that not all Android users are able to set reminders on Gemini at this time. This may be part of a server-side rollout, so users may need to wait to use the added functionality. There are also reports that Gemini will completely replace the Assistant app for some users in some regions after a fresh install or app update.
These changes come after Google promised to quickly improve Gemini and respond directly to user feedback. Since the company made that promise, it has already released a number of updates and feature additions.
