StarTran urges business owners, residents to consider controversial bus stop relocation proposal

LINCOLN, Neb. (COLOGNE) – The landscape of 11th and L Streets is already dotted with bus traffic, but a proposal that would further shake it up has sparked an uproar in the community.

“I honestly don’t know how we’re going to stay in business and safely and successfully dispatch trolleys full of members of the public,” said Drew Philippi, owner of Group Therapy Bike Tours.

Philippi said his business will be especially affected because the stop will land where the trolley departs.

“This nightlife crowd, combined with people loitering at public StarTran stations, I’m worried that this is a dangerous concoction that they’re brewing, both physically and literally.” Philippi said.

Liz Elliott, director of Lincoln Transportation and Utilities, said the parking lot at the Old Settel building best meets the criteria for a start run, and Elliott said the city will not allow businesses to lose metered parking in the process. A parking lot will be opened in the parking lot to accommodate this.

“We want to work with the neighborhood and the businesses in the area,” Elliott said. “And we will continue to do that, just as we have already accommodated the nine bus lines that stop there.”

But business owners aren’t the only ones raising eyebrows.

“As someone who lives in that part of town, there’s air pollution, noise pollution, and an increase in crime in the area,” said Bridget Hill, a nearby resident.

The current bus stop on the Gold Building property is regularly patrolled by off-duty LPD. But Kathy Ashley, a longtime bus rider and recent StarTran advisory board member, said it’s the right move for passenger safety over the next three years until the new center opens. said.

“We’ll never get there unless we all come together and compromise to achieve the end goal,” Ashley said.

StarTran will hold another open house tomorrow at the F Street Community Center starting at 5:30 p.m. The StarTran Advisory Board could make a final decision at its Feb. 29 meeting.
