An interdisciplinary team of indigenous and Western scientists from around the world recently investigated the evolution and dispersal of domestic horses in North America and ultimately Eurasia. This award is given annually by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to outstanding publications in science.

A diverse team of authors on early dispersal of domestic horses in the Great Plains and Northern Rockies will publish their findings in the journal in spring 2023. The team included four of his researchers from the University of New Mexico.
The lead author is Will Taylor, a UNM anthropology graduate who is now an assistant professor and curator of archeology at the University of Colorado Boulder. UNM professor Emily Jones was one of the paper’s senior co-authors. UNM alumnus Caroline Gabe is currently an assistant professor of anthropology at Adams State University in Colorado, and Victoria Monaguru is currently a UNM archeology Ph.D. He was also among the authors of the program.
The $25,000 prize, awarded at the AAAS Annual Meeting, is the oldest and most prestigious award given by AAAS. This award is given annually to outstanding publications in Science journals.
This paper combines archaeozoological studies of ancient horses collected from archaeological sites and museum collections across the continent with cutting-edge genomics and traditional Indigenous scientific knowledge to explore the human and horse population of North America. helped rewrite the story of horses and showed that horses had a deeper antiquity. Native societies throughout the region than can be gleaned from European or American historical records. Most importantly, this study demonstrated the enhanced research experience and scientific power that comes from thoughtful cross-cultural partnerships based on equal footing.
Funds from this award will go toward establishing a new endowment at the University of Colorado. This endowment is named in memory of the late study co-author, elder, knowledge guardian and cultural educator of the Sichang Lakota Nation, Sam Hi Crane. This gift will help support research and training for indigenous perspectives and young professionals in archaeology, archaeogenetics and the museum world. This gift is the first step in a larger partnership between leaders at the Global Institute of Traditional Sciences (GIFTS), the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Université Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, and the University of Colorado.
