In a newly updated support document (spotted by 9to5Mac), the company says, “Batteries in iPhone 15 models now retain 80% of their original capacity for 1,000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. “It’s designed.” However, this has changed from the original number of 500 cycles that Apple still offers for iPhone 14 and earlier. When Apple refers to “iPhone 15 models,” it means all four devices released last fall: the 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max.
This change is the result of new testing. Apple said it conducted tests that fully charged and discharged the phone’s battery 1,000 times “under specific circumstances that represent typical use cases.” The estimated lifespan has been updated to reflect improvements in the power management system of the latest generation of iPhones.
For now, this will create supporting documentation that makes the latest phones look particularly appealing, and may encourage some holders to upgrade their current phones. However, Apple has acknowledged that it may still update the numbers for older iPhones, which, after all, still benefit from much of the same power management system introduced in the iOS update. The company is “currently investigating” whether the numbers for iPhone 14 and earlier need to be changed.
It’s well known that rechargeable batteries in iPhones and other electronic devices deteriorate over time and eventually need to be replaced, but it’s important to take good care of your handset and avoid draining the battery unnecessarily.
