According to a report from Engadget, Apple announced on Tuesday that it has revised the estimated battery life of the iPhone 15 series. The company now claims that the new iPhones can retain 80 percent of their original charging capacity after 1,000 cycles, which is double previous estimates. The company also added that this improvement does not require any new hardware or software updates. Additionally, this adjustment coincides with an upcoming EU regulation that rates mobile phones based on battery life.
Previously, Apple’s support document stated that iPhone batteries can retain 80% of their original full charge after 500 cycles. However, after retesting the long-term battery health of its 2023 smartphones (iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max), Apple found that they can maintain 80% capacity after at least 1,000 cycles. Did. The company plans to update its supporting documentation to reflect this new estimate.
Apple explained that the testing included subjecting the battery to 1,000 charge/discharge cycles under specific conditions, along with a variety of tests that simulate common usage scenarios. Despite no physical or software changes, Apple attributes the increased estimates to continued improvements to battery components and iOS power management.
That said, for older iPhones manufactured before 2023, the original estimate of retaining 80% capacity after 500 charge cycles still holds true. The company said it is currently investigating whether estimates for older models need to be updated.
