Two Maryland residents were sentenced today for mail fraud after trying to defraud Apple of 5,000 iPhones worth millions of dollars. Chinese nationals Haotian Sun and Pengfei Xue masterminded a scheme to force Apple to replace genuine iPhones with counterfeit iPhones sent for repair.
From May 2017 to September 2019, Sun and Xue received shipments of counterfeit iPhones from Hong Kong and returned them to Apple retailers and Apple Authorized Service Providers using spoofed serial numbers and IMEI numbers.
In total, more than 5,000 iPhones were submitted to Apple during those two years.
The two men were found guilty of mail fraud and conspiracy to commit mail fraud and face the statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The verdict will be handed down on June 21, 2024.
