The first developer preview of Android 15 has been released, so I was a little excited to dive in and check out the new features. Surprisingly, the feature I was most looking forward to was private spacestill MIA.
What is private space?: Private Space is a native Android solution and Samsung’s answer to Secure Folder. It allows users to lock apps from opening on their devices without using biometrics or lock codes. This is very important for people who store sensitive information on their devices. Google Photos’ locked folders are a nice addition to protect photos and videos you don’t want seen, but I still think a full app lockdown feature is needed.
So where is it: The last time we heard about Private Space was in December 2023. At the time, it was still completely unclear whether Google intended to release Private Space for his Android 15, or if he intended to use it as a feature drop exclusive to Pixel devices. However, looking at the latest information, most people believe it will arrive in Android 15. Anyone who owns an Android should have a feature like this if they need it, so that’s the hope.
There’s no need to worry, now that the first developer preview has passed. The first DP is used almost entirely for backend developers and introduces minimal new features. Once we start previewing and beta versions in more detail, we should find out what Android 15 actually offers to the owner of his Android smartphone. We will discuss this feature in more detail soon.
And to you security buddies who say private space is not a good way to secure your phone information, we get it, you’re too cool. One of the great critiques I saw was around biometrics. For mobile phones it would be nice to be able to unlock using your thumb, but for private spaces you could use his second finger or even facial recognition. The idea is that one lock cannot open the other. Just something to think about.
