Apple has been beta testing the upcoming iOS 17.4 iPhone software update for several weeks, and today released the fourth beta version to developers. This release means developers can run updates, verify behavior, and ensure that their apps work with updates before making them publicly available. That’s expected to happen in the coming weeks, but this particular beta release comes with new Apple CarPlay features that weren’t previously part of the iPhone’s feature set.
This change was confirmed in the iOS 17.4 Beta 4 release notes and spotted by 9to5Mac. In these release notes, Apple confirmed that in supported CarPlay vehicles, Apple Maps will present a new instrument cluster experience that includes information about upcoming maneuvers. Users can also switch display types between the main instrument cluster screens by tapping the on-screen map settings button.

There are currently no actual details on how this will work or which cars will be supported, but this tweak is part of the next generation of CarPlay that will be introduced to some Aston Martin and Porsche cars later this year. It seems that some are not. However, it requires dual-screen Apple Maps support, which is not available in most cars that have standard CarPlay implemented.
Apple first started adding support for dual-screen CarPlay in 2019, but as is often the case, automakers were slow to get on board with Apple’s offer. However, this feature is available on some vehicles, including vehicles from Volvo and its spin-off electric car company Polestar.
