Android 15 could make your webpages load faster — here’s how

The first developer preview of Android 15 is now available, and we’re getting even more opinions on what the software has to offer. The latest improvements coming in Android 15 could make web browsing faster and easier. This is always a good thing.

Android 15 will expand Android’s PinnerService, and Android Police has discovered that it will now be possible to pin Android’s WebView to memory. Or at least some of it is possible, but it should be enough to improve page load times in WebView.

WebView is a part of Android that allows apps to render web content themselves. It is based on the same codebase as Google Chrome, but means that the app can provide services on his web without directing you to a standalone browser.

Although WebView and Chrome are effectively separate, they share certain code and resources in a library called trichrome. This means no duplicate content will take up space on your phone. This is important because Google is pinning some of the trichrome libraries in the first Android 15 developer preview.

WebView is a part of Android that allows apps to render web content themselves.

The idea behind PinnerService is that critical processes, such as Core OS components, can be locked into the phone’s memory. That way, another app won’t come in and steal that memory, forcing you to start the original software from scratch.

So by pinning parts of the Trichrome library to memory, WebView pages load a little faster on Android 15. This means you can do what you need to do faster. It’s not entirely clear how fast it will be and may depend on how much RAM your phone actually has available. But I don’t need to explain why less wait time is a good thing.

Android Police also points out that Google may have plans to make the WebView API more modular as part of Project Mainline. Project Mainline is a system that enables the best Android smartphone updates to be distributed through Google Play instead of over-the-air updates.

The only downside here is that this is only a developer preview of Android 15. There is no guarantee that WebView will still be stuck in memory when the final version of the software is released later this year. The software is still in flux and some of the features seen in the preview may never be implemented.
