The German football world is surrounded by sadness following the passing of Andreas Brehme. Brehme, 63, died of cardiac arrest Monday night, Brehme’s partner Suzanne Schaefer confirmed. D.P.A. on tuesday.

“It is with great sadness that I can confirm on behalf of my family that my partner, Andreas Brehme, passed away suddenly last night due to cardiac arrest. We respect your privacy and refrain from asking questions at this difficult time. Thank you for your continued support,” Schaefer said in a statement.

according to builtBrehme was taken to a clinic near his apartment in Munich, but help came too late.

Brehme was one of the most highly regarded German soccer players of the 1980s and 1990s, and was one of the leading players in the 1990 World Cup when Franz Beckenbauer’s German team won on penalties against Argentina, and helped Roma’s It left its mark on history.

Brehme was born in Hamburg and started his professional career in 1980 with Saarbrücken before moving to Kaiserslautern. It was here that the wing-back became a star and eventually a club legend. The man with the rocket later joined Bayern Munich for 2 million German marks (1 million euros), a record fee at the time.

Just two years later, he moved to Inter Milan. With the Italian side, he was named Italian Player of the Year in 1989 and won the UEFA Cup in 1991.

After a year with Real Zaragoza in Spain, he returned to Kaiserslautern and almost retired in 1996, but stayed and led the team to promotion. The following year, he helped the club to a sensational Bundesliga title before retiring after making over 300 appearances for the club.

Brehme made 86 appearances for Germany, and five of his eight international goals came at World Cups or European Championships. Brehme was known to be good with both feet, scoring with his left foot in the 1986 quarter-final against Mexico, and this was evident when he took a penalty with his right foot in the 1990 World Cup final.

After his playing career, Brehme earned several coaching badges, but had little success at both Kaiserslautern and Unterhaching, as well as at Stuttgart, where he was assistant coach to Giovanni Trapattoni. He has not coached since 2006 and most recently appeared at Franz Beckenbauer’s memorial service last month.

He leaves behind his partner and two sons from a previous relationship.
