Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab Active 5 last month, and now the rugged Android tablet is finally available in the United States.
The Galaxy Tab Active 5 is different from your average tablet. It doesn’t have the sleek look of Samsung’s latest premium tablets. Instead, what’s important is “military-grade durability.” It is designed with frontline workers and industrial settings in mind, and is packed with unique features tailored to these environments, the company says.
Boasting IP68 and MIL-STD-810H certification, the Galaxy Tab Active 5 is water-resistant and tough as nails. The rugged design makes it ideal for use in the field and allows you to use the screen even with gloves on.
This tablet stands out in that it ships with Android 14 out of the box and comes with four Android OS updates and five years of security updates. This is unusual for a rugged Android tablet. And Samsung offers the S Pen for all your writing, signing, and drawing needs.
The tablet’s specs may not jump off the page, but it comes with its own fan base anyway. Tab Active 5 features an 8-inch LCD display with 1920 x 1200 resolution and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. The slimmer bezel allows for one-handed operation and is lighter than the previous generation Galaxy Tab Active 4.
Taking a closer look at the specs, the Galaxy Tab Active 5 is powered by an Exynos 1380 chip and 6GB of RAM. 128 GB of built-in storage is shown, but if that’s not enough, add a microSD card for extra space. Flip it over and you’ll find a 13MP camera on the back and a 5MP camera on the front that’s good for selfies.
The Galaxy Tab Active 5 has a removable 5,050mAh battery that you can replace yourself. There’s also a nifty “no battery mode”. It will continue to work when connected to a USB-C power source without a battery.
In addition to the standard version, there is also an Enterprise Edition tailored for businesses. Special editions make it easy to enroll, set up, process, and manage large numbers of devices.
The Wi-Fi version of the Galaxy Tab Active 5 costs $549, or $659 if you’re looking for a 5G upgrade. Sure, it’s a bit pricey compared to other Galaxy tablets, but you get what you pay for, as Samsung is targeting this rugged product squarely at enterprise customers.
