Scientists discover maximum age at which humans can live

If you’re worried about how fast your next “big” birthday is approaching, we have good news for you.

Sure, turning 25, 30, or 40 may seem scary, but it turns out that scientists have been able to determine the maximum age a human can live, and there are only a few more years to go. I can almost guarantee you have plenty of years left.

The findings come from a study conducted by Erasmus University statisticians at Tilburg University and the University of Rotterdam, which looked at the age at which 75,000 people died in the Netherlands over a 30-year period up to 2017. be.

Interestingly, they did not focus on life expectancy to derive their findings. Instead, the researchers wanted to ask how long one human being could live as long as they took care of themselves, and whether their lives were not cut short by disease or other circumstances. .

Considering the ages at which the people in their study died, the researchers determined that a person’s maximum life expectancy plateaus in their 90s, but that doesn’t mean lifespans end.

Researchers suggested that humans are unlikely to live beyond 115 years, but found that women live slightly longer than men.

The maximum lifespan for women was 115.7 years, while men were estimated to reach up to 114.1 years.

Professor John Einmar, one of the three scientists behind the study, told AFP of the findings: “On average, people are living longer, but among us… The oldest person hasn’t aged in the last 30 years.”

“Certainly, there is a kind of wall here. Of course, life expectancy has increased. Yet the upper limit itself has not changed.”

Despite the researchers’ findings, Einmar acknowledged that there are instances of people bending the standards and living beyond these recommended maximum lifespans.

And early last year, French nun Sister Andre died at the age of 118. After her death, Guinness World Records recognized American-born Maria Branyas Morera as the world’s oldest person at 115 years old.

In a 2019 interview, Morella attributed his longevity to “a well-ordered life with great social comfort…a good life without excess.” She was born in San Francisco, California on March 4, 1907 and moved to Catalonia in 1914.
