Novaya Gazeta Europe has learned that the body of Alexei Navalny is in the morgue of Salekhard District Clinical Hospital. Officials said an autopsy had not yet been performed as of Saturday.
Following his sudden death on Friday, Navalny’s body was initially taken to the town of Rabitnangi, 36 kilometers from the penal colony, where he died in the village of Harup in Russia’s far north’s Yamalo-Nenets autonomous region. However, sources said the body was transferred to the regional clinical hospital in the regional capital Salekhard late on Friday.
“Normally, bodies of people who die in prison are taken directly to the Forensic Medicine Department on Glazkova Street, but in this case for some reason they were taken to the clinical hospital,” said a paramedic from Salekhard Ambulance.
“They drove him to the morgue and then put two police officers in front of the door. Maybe they should put up a sign that says, ‘Something strange is happening here!’ unknown. Of course, everyone wanted to know what happened, what the secret was, whether they were trying to hide something important. ”
It was immediately established that the body handed over was that of Alexei Navalny and that his death was “not of a criminal nature” (a term used to indicate that no firearms were involved). It was revealed. Rumors then spread that the hospital’s pathologist was barred from performing an autopsy, sources added.
“Opinions are divided at this point,” the paramedic said. “Some said that orders had been issued from Moscow to wait for the arrival of experts, while others said that the doctors at the hospital themselves had refused to perform an autopsy. The case was political and it was unclear what the outcome would be. It’s not obvious. And if you get a direct order to perform an autopsy and change the results, you can’t get out of it. And you could be the perpetrator too. …But if there was no autopsy, ask. There’s no one there.”
The paramedic also said he was told there were signs of bruising on Mr. Navalny’s body, adding that although it did not appear to be a bruise from a blow, Mr. Navalny must have still been alive for the bruising to appear.
“As an experienced paramedic, I can tell you that the injuries described by the witnesses were due to convulsions. … A person is convulsing and other people try to hold the person down, but the convulsions are very strong. In some cases, bruising will appear. It was also said that his chest had bruising from indirect cardiac massage.”
“So they tried to resuscitate him, but he probably died of cardiac arrest,” the paramedic said. “But no one has said anything about why he went into cardiac arrest.”
