Eleven Long Island high schools were recognized for expanding access to computer science education for girls.
These schools recently received the College Board’s Advanced Placement Computer Science Women’s Diversity Award for their high representation of women in AP Computer Science classes. They are among her 1,127 recipients nationwide.
The winners are: Baldwin High School. Massapequa High School; Mattituck High School; Mineola High School; North Shore Hebrew Academy High School in Great Neck. Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset. “We are extremely proud to be able to provide this opportunity to female students who have been historically underrepresented, especially in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” said St. Anthony College’s Department of Mathematics Chief William Quinn said. “This award highlights the efforts of many people and we will continue to strive to meet these high standards.”
To earn the designation, at least a percentage of the school’s female population or at least half of the students in either AP Computer Science Principles or AP needed to take the AP Computer Science exam during the 2022-23 school year. . Computer Science A had to be female.

Alan Dugan has been named interim principal at Glen Head Elementary School in the North Shore School District. She replaces Peter Rufa, who currently serves as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for the Floral Park-Belrose School District.
Mr. Dugan previously served as principal at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School in Bayport for 17 years and before that was assistant principal at Oyster Bay High School from 2004 to 2007.

Nassau BOCES GT Tech Career and Technical Education High School in Levittown has developed a new esthetics program in response to increased enrollment in cosmetology courses. Four Long Island students — Cold Spring Harbor junior/senior Kylie Drakos High School; Calvin Nguyen of Deer Park High School; Arianna Watson of Lawrence High School. Lucy Reardon of Southside High School in Rockville Center was among 25 people recommended statewide to the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program by the state Department of Education.
The White House Presidential Scholars Committee selects students each year based on factors such as academic success, artistic excellence, and community service. Applications are by invitation only, and selected scholars will receive medallions in June.
