What Apple can learn about AI from Google and Samsung

AI is no longer the buzzword of the future. This makes our phones smarter, more useful, and, frankly, more fun. Artificial intelligence can filter calls and automate your life. Samsung’s new Galaxy S24 takes it to another level with AI that helps you write and do amazing things with your camera. Like it or not, AI is now a must-have phone feature on all high-end models.

One of the longest-running technology columns on the web, Android & Chill is a Saturday discussion about Android, Google, and technology in general.

Apple knows this. Rumors and leaks suggest that iOS 18 will not only revamp the App Store to enable third-party alternatives, but also introduce some new generative AI features and Siri using large-scale language models such as Google Gemini and ChatGPT. 2.0 will also be introduced. This could help Google, and more importantly Samsung, catch up to what they’re seeing.

Apple doesn’t do it because it wants to. It has to be. According to KGI Security’s Ming-Chi Kuo, who is considered one of the most trusted voices regarding Apple’s future, the lack of AI capabilities will cause iPhone sales to decline by 10-15% in 2024. That means they will.sell more Mobile phones than last year.

“Apple does not expect new iPhone models with significant design changes or a more comprehensive/differentiated GenAI ecosystem/applications to be released until 2025 at the earliest. Until then, It is likely to have a negative impact on Apple’s iPhone shipment momentum and ecosystem growth.”

Apple is not used to this position. Not caring about what competitors are doing is almost a trademark of Apple. The company relies on brand loyalty and a so-called “reality distortion field” that convinces consumers that they don’t need features that Apple devices don’t have. The potential for revenue loss changes the game – Apple must follow Google and Samsung’s lead here.

It’s also the best time to do it. I don’t use an iPhone, but I think it’s a great choice in many ways. One way to do that is by being cautious about Apple’s data privacy. Now that developers have figured out how to do a lot of the AI processing locally on the phone itself, rather than sending everything to cloud servers, Apple’s ultra-powerful phone chip is ready to be put to some use. I was there. This has both privacy and performance benefits.

If the rumors are true, and I think they are, things could get interesting.

There’s no reason Apple can’t replicate exactly what Samsung and Google are doing. If company executives don’t want to spend billions of dollars on R&D or hire people who already know how to do R&D, they can do what Samsung did and partner with Google or another company. You can just leave the tedious work to them. In Mountain View or elsewhere. If Apple wanted, these features would already be in the iPhone.

Not seeing them means Apple has decided to go its own way and wait until it’s ready or forced to add AI features to its software. As we’ve seen, this could all be part of the plan.

Apple’s camera is already great, but imagine AI-powered photo editing that suggests improvements, removes blurry faces, or creates amazing artistic effects. Yes, we’ve already seen this from other smartphone manufacturers, but when Apple does this, iOS users will find it magical as long as it works as expected.

Don’t even get me started on health and fitness. Personalized insights, real-time coaching, and even AI-powered proactive health monitoring will be a game-changer for Apple Watch users. It doesn’t matter what your competitors can do. The key is for Apple to get it right the first time.

By taking enough time to release an AI-powered iOS, Apple could probably skip most of the bugs and stupidity seen with ChatGPT and Google. bard Gemini. Getting it right the first time is something Google and Samsung struggle with. Because we focus on developing and delivering new features rather than waiting until someone figures it out.

New Siri and AI-powered cameras may not be enough to lure users away from Samsung and Google, but they will go a long way toward keeping billions of people locked in Apple’s ecosystem. That’s important. Maintenance is more important than growth. But a slight nudge in Apple’s favor might be enough, and even better.
