Installing Pitaka MagEZ Car Mount Pro 2: Easy and Flexible
Most modern cars come pre-installed with software such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, which allows you to access content from your iPhone or Android-based device on your car’s infotainment system. However, if you own an older car, a new GM, or a Tesla that doesn’t support this technology, this isn’t possible. In these cases, you may want to consider a car mount so you can use your phone while on the move.
Like similar tools, the Pitaka MagEZ Car Mount Pro 2 attaches to your car’s air vents for easy access to your phone. It also has wireless charging capabilities and is easy to transport.
To use the $59.99 car mount, your phone must have Apple MagSafe or be secured in a MagSafe-compatible case. An integrated magnet connects your phone to the car mount. For flexible viewing, the mount includes a 17mm universal swivel ball with 360 degrees of adjustment. At the end there is a plastic attachment that plugs horizontally into the vent. The mount comes with a USB-C to USB-C charging cable. If your car has a USB-A port, you’ll need to buy a separate connector, making the setup more expensive.
After installing the mount review unit, I took the car out for a drive a few times to see how it worked. Connecting the car mount to the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the vent was easy. Adjusting the position of the car mount using the swivel ball was also quick and easy, but I don’t recommend doing this while driving. Keep your eyes on the road!
The mount, and perhaps more importantly, my phone withstood the road conditions. During testing, we drove the car on the highway, up and down hills, and on gravel roads. I never had my phone fall off the mount or shake. It was safe.
Unique: No NFC action required
The Pitaka MagEZ Car Mount Pro 2 has built-in NFC functionality, which is unique for this kind of product. You can use NFC shortcuts to automatically activate apps from your phone when your phone makes contact. For example, your iPhone can automatically start Apple Music or open the Maps app. The mount includes a 3-position switch that allows you to create three NFC shortcuts. To enable the mount’s NFC functionality, use its Apple Shortcuts app on an iPhone, or Modes and Routines on an Android-based device. I set up three NFC shortcuts on my iPhone using the Shortcuts app.
Although the NFC setup process is relatively painless, it is essential to review the online documentation provided by Pitaka. Once setup, the shortcut works as expected, but its usefulness is questionable.
Intuitively, you would expect these shortcuts to be automatically activated every time you connect your phone to the car mount. But that’s not the case. Instead, you must tap the top of your device to the bottom of the mount to activate the shortcut before attaching your phone to the mount. Once activated, the app will automatically open and run the shortcut you requested. When this happens, a message will appear on your phone’s screen. Rather than go through all this hassle, it’s much easier to connect your phone to the mount and launch the app using your finger as usual. Or, on an iPhone, ask Siri.
One last point about NFC shortcuts: NFC switch location under MagSafe surface. This design does not allow you to move between the three switch positions while the phone is connected to the mount. Most people probably don’t switch between shortcuts often, but the design is still somewhat goofy. Placing the switch on the back of the product makes it even easier to use.
I’m not sure how much was added to the price of the car mount to include NFC functionality, but I’m sure it’s not worth it.
Should I buy Pitaka MagEZ Car Mount Pro 2?
This minimalist car mount looks great and feels sturdy right out of the box. Easy and quick setup will have you up and running in just seconds. Still, there are a few things that make me suspend my recommendation.
First, the price is too high. It’s about 3x the price of the best car mounts on the market. Second, most people who buy this mount will be happy to know that it will also require additional accessories to work with USB-A. Finally, I question the need for NFC. This is one of his features that falls firmly into the gimmick category. I didn’t find this flashy feature to be very convincing. However, Pitaka could have included a USB-A cable or adapter that would fit into a common car port.
Pitaka MagEZ Car Mount Pro 2 does just that. Equally solid products are available and are often much cheaper.
