Google announced Android 15, the next big evolution of its mobile operating system. As always, the development and release cycle follows a three-step strategy. February 16, 2024 marks the start of the first phase, which will directly target developers and phone manufacturers and introduce changes to help them get used to the new software.
The first build of Android 15 is marked as Developer Preview 1, which will be followed by a beta release. This is a release that can be downloaded over the air without any special tactics required. Once the beta testing phase is complete, the final stable version will be released. This usually happens towards the end of the year.
All phones that can download Android 15
Like previous versions released over the past few years, the first developer preview of Android 15 is also limited to Google’s Pixel smartphones. Below is the complete list of phones compatible with Android 15.
Android 15 is expected to arrive on more smartphones from other manufacturers over time, but at least in developer preview, only the Pixels mentioned above can join in on the Android 15 fun.
Android 15 developer preview release date
As of Friday, February 16th, the first developer preview of Android 15 is now available for download from the official Android resources page. Developers can now flash their Android 15 system images on compatible smartphones.
Even if you don’t have a compatible device on hand, you can still experience Android 15 and build apps on updated code based on the official Android emulator bundled as part of the Android Studio kit.
Google plans to release a total of two developer preview versions of Android 15, with the second one expected to be released in March.
Android 15 beta release date
Android 15 will continue to be tested among the developer community over the coming weeks. According to the official roadmap provided by Google, the first beta build of Android 15 is scheduled to be released in April.
As mentioned above, beta testing is a public process and does not require any special invitations or permissions. All you need to do is enroll your device in the public beta testing batch. But most importantly, it has far fewer bugs than the development build. This is the only build I would recommend the average hobbyist even consider experimenting with.
A total of four beta updates will be released over the next few months. The fourth, which Google says means it’s “near the final stages” in terms of public readiness, is expected to take place between July and August.
Android 15 final release date
The beta testing phase for next-gen Android iterations lasts the longest and includes multiple beta update releases. For Android 15, beta builds will be available for the first time in April, with the platform expected to be stable around June.
Currently, Google has not said exactly when Android 15 will be released to the general public as a stable update, but it will likely be released towards the end of the third quarter of 2024. For example, Android 14 was released in October last year, while Android 13 was released in August.
When it comes to Android 15, the best time is between September and October. However, depending on the depth of the changelog and the scale of software optimizations required, the release window could move to either end of the estimated slot.
