The USA TODAY Restaurants of the Year 2024 list, announced today, features 47 restaurants ranging from fine dining to supper clubs to seafood shacks.
USA TODAY Network’s food journalists from across the country have pooled their expertise to select restaurants that include places they know, love and recommend.
Providence’s Gift Horse and Charlestown’s Sly Fox Den Too made the Rhode Island list. But there are many other restaurants in the state that deserve praise. Here are five of his other spots we’d like to see on the Restaurant of the Year list.

Pasquale’s Pizzeria Napoletana

If a restaurant is good enough to be on Italy’s best of list, that’s good enough for us. Pasquale’s Pizzeria Napoletana in Wakefield placed him 12th in his prestigious ranking of America’s 50 Best. The July list was released by 50 Top Pizza USA.

They wrote about his restaurant: “Pasquale’s pizza is authentically Neapolitan. It’s light because it’s fully fermented and expertly baked in a wood-fired oven expertly crafted by master Neapolitan artisans.”
The good thing about Pasquale’s is that you can enjoy not only Napoletana pizza, but also New York-style pies, which are thin and crispy, and even Grandma, which is a square party pizza.

Newport’s Giusto has been named a new James Beard Foundation Award semifinalist in the Outstanding Hospitality category. This national category recognizes restaurants that foster hospitality while demonstrating consistent excellence in food, atmosphere, and operations.
Who would argue with this description of Chef Kevin O’Donnell’s Freestyle Italian restaurant at Hammett’s Hotel on Newport’s waterfront? The menu features elegant interpretations of traditional Italian cuisine. Think fancy fried ricotta for an appetizer and a sumptuous affogato that pays homage to Fluffernutter for dessert.
Tuxpan Taqueria

Tuxpan Taqueria in Central Falls was named a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation Award for Best New Restaurant last month. The family-run restaurant serves Mexican street food. It doesn’t get more authentic than this.

Diego Alcantar is originally from Tuxpan, a town in Michoacán, Mexico, and immigrated to the United States at a young age. Like many restaurant owners, he started as a dishwasher and worked his way up to chef, bringing traditional cuisine to Rhode Island. His mother Maria also cooks at the restaurant.
Sharks Peruvian Cuisine

If you are traveling to South America, go to Central Falls. Sitting directly above the beautiful Blackstone River, sip and sip on a bowlful of ceviche mixed with fresh seafood and fish, including octopus and squid rings. Or enjoy grilled meats such as rib roast, anticucho beef heart skewers, pork ribs, chicken, chorizo, and sausage. Comes with a mini grill.

From the owners of Bacaro, Otra offers a taste of the Iberian Peninsula. Explore Spanish and Portuguese cuisine, which also has southern French influences from the Pyrenees. You can order small plates to fill the table and share, or enjoy large plates like paella. Don’t miss out on desserts like flan. But first, you have to start with Huevos Cabreados. Huevos cabreados are bowls of thin fries topped with a fried egg.
