When food writers eat together, it’s common to share. Plates are passed around the table so everyone can sample a bite or two before someone takes their order.
A love of sharing spurred the creation of the 2024 USA TODAY Restaurant of the Year list.
I know there are other “best restaurants” lists out there. This idea is not new. So what makes ours stand out? While other organizations send teams of writers to parachute into the area and sample the food, our journalists live in the communities they cover.
The restaurants on our list are places we often recommend and places we take friends and family. These places are so nice that I often finish dinner there and sit at a table while planning my next visit.
“Our food writers live here, work here and eat here,” said project leader Liz Johnson, a senior director at The Record and NorthJersey.com and a former food writer. Ta. “They know their beats. These may not be the most upscale restaurants in America, but they are some of them. These are the restaurants we want to eat at again and again.”

You’ll notice that in our list we haven’t skipped countries with elevated roads, as many people do. Yes, you can have a great meal in Los Angeles or New York (incidentally, we’ve included restaurants in those cities on our list), but you can also have a great dining experience in Goshen, Kentucky, or Shreveport, Louisiana. Masu.
With more than 200 sites in 42 states, USA TODAY Network’s roots run deep. We tapped into that expertise and asked our writers to share their best and favorite things about the towns and cities they cover. We received over 150 applications.
Our team of experienced editors and writers then handpicked that list to 47 locations, looking for places that offer consistently great service, a unique atmosphere, and food that’s sure to please.
We also looked for a rich buffet of flavours. And we’ve found it, from a third-generation counter-service seafood shack in Cortez, Fla., to a Laotian restaurant in Oklahoma City led by a James Beard Award finalist chef.

“For me, reading this list has been a delicious journey across America,” said Todd Price, who writes about restaurants throughout the Southeast and is a former James Beard Award nominating committee member. He is one of the writers who helped select and edit Restaurant of the Year. “Restaurants in places large and small show how diverse dining is in this country today. In many other countries, the list goes on and on, with little more than setting foot outside the big cities. We miss a lot of things about how people eat and how well they eat, which is America today.”
Most of the restaurants we highlighted are within the communities we cover, but we also have a few entries from outside the city. When our writers aren’t covering their home turf, they love to travel for food. Otherwise, how would we know how great our hometown spots actually are?
