What you need to know

  • It’s all but confirmed that message editing features will be coming to Google Messages following the latest leaks.
  • Android experts AssembleDebug have managed to get message editing working in Google Messaging after flipping some developer flags.
  • Google has not yet confirmed that message editing functionality will be coming to Google Messages, and a release date is unknown.

Google Messages has been steadily adding features lately, but one notable feature it’s missing is message editing. Rumor has it that this situation may change soon, as he was spotted on Google Messages in early December mentioning message editing. However, it is now almost confirmed that it will appear.

Android X expert @AssembleDebug was able to get message editing up and running in Google Messages as of Thursday. After toggling some flags in the latest Google Messages beta, this feature is now available. This confirms that since the first leak, Google has been actively working on preparing his message editing in Google Messages for release.

For assembly debugging, we used the following beta software versions: messages.android_20240213_01_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic

After a message is sent in Google Messages, users have 30 minutes to edit it. Your message history appears, including a complete list of your edits. To edit a message, just long press on the message and tap the new pencil icon in the list of options that appears. Naturally, you can only edit her RCS messages.

Tapping the pencil icon turns a standard text entry box into a message editing box. After making the desired edits, you can save your changes by tapping the Send button or by tapping Enter.

As with any other instance of message editing in a messaging service, both Google Messages users must be updated for the feature to work properly. If only the editor has the latest version of her Google Messages, the recipient will receive the edited message as a separate her RCS chat.

Previously reported Google Messages flags related to message editing include: wrapper.enable_edit_ui, bugle.load_edit_history, bugle.process_outcoming_edits and bugle.process_incoming_edits. Perhaps by flipping these flags, AssembleDebug can now edit messages in Google Messages Beta.

There are several messaging services that already support message editing, including iMessage, WhatsApp, and Telegram. Google is lagging behind due to the lack of support for message editing in Google Messages, but that’s about to change soon.

However, Google has not yet officially acknowledged this change. Other than the fact that this feature is apparently working, there is no news regarding its possible rollout at this time.
