CHILLICOTHE — Uniot elementary school students recently showed off their academic skills by using the scientific method to answer their burning questions and create exhibits for the Scopes Science and Engineering Fair.
The participating students were members of Unioto’s SCOPES program. SCOPES stands for Science Cooperative of Physicians and Elementary Students. This is Unioto’s program that provides advanced learning in STEM subjects and helps inspire future scientists.
Teacher Jenni Domo said the students had been working on the project since August and were able to choose a topic. Questions include: “What is the best hand-washing method?”, “How does temperature affect crystal growth?”, “Which liquid dissolves Skittles fastest?”, ” Is a dog’s mouth cleaner than mine?” more.
Before investigating and collecting data, students researched questions, developed hypotheses, and developed conclusions to present to community judges.
Domo said these projects help students imagine what it would be like to be a scientist and encourage them to learn more about their passions.
“If you can’t see it, you can’t be it,” Domo said.
One student, Gabe Moats, asked if gamers had faster reaction times than non-gamers. He said he chose that question because he is a gamer and thought people who play games have fast reaction times, and said his research provided evidence to support his hypothesis. . His favorite part of the project was learning how to calculate reaction time.
Judges ranked students on their committees, their research, and how they presented it. This exercise helps students learn how to present information clearly to adults. Judge Nancy Thornsbury said she was impressed by the wide range of topics the students chose. She understands how influential these fairs can be because her son, who is about to graduate from high school, did a project on drones at the science fair and is currently considering a career as a pilot. I am.
