For more than 20 years, Viet Thai Cafe, a York County staple serving Thai, Laotian and Vietnamese fusion cuisine, has made national news. Viet Thai Cafe was named to the 2024 USA TODAY Restaurant of the Year list, along with 46 of his other restaurants.
It was one of only three restaurants in Pennsylvania to make the list, along with Pittsburgh’s Speckled Egg Cafe and Philadelphia’s Doro Bet. Each restaurant tells a story through its food, offerings, dining experience, and even the story behind the business.
Will York County restaurants appear on the list next year and put us back on the map? Maybe. Here are seven restaurants we’d like to see on your list.
hamills indian fusion

The bright aromas of Indian cuisine greet you even before you step into self-taught chef Hamir Patel’s restaurant.
Elaborate art is displayed on the walls. The menu features a variety of Indian fusion lunches, dinners, desserts, Indian inspired cocktails, spiced chai and more. Classic Indian dishes such as tikka masala and butter chicken are served with naan.

El Serrano

Serving York for over 30 years, El Serrano has been in business since 1986 through a combination of determination, family recipes and a loyal and dedicated staff.
The name El Serrano refers to the serrano pepper in Mexican cuisine, and in Peru it means “men of the Andes.”
The cuisine consists of classic Tex-Mex dishes with a Peruvian twist, including tapas dishes such as Ropa Vieja, a hearty dish of pulled beef sirloin braised with tomatoes, red peppers, and onions and served with white rice. Bay City Seafood Restaurant

In 1963, sales manager William “Ted” Smith quit his job, bought a Volkswagen Beetle, and stuffed it with crabs and seafood.
He started selling fresh Chesapeake Bay seafood out of his car in Hanover and unknowingly began a tradition that would last more than 60 years.
Today, Bay City Seafood Restaurant is a hub for seafood lovers in Hanover. The building can accommodate more than 300 patrons at any given time. 100 people on deck, 100 people in the lounge and 100 people in the dining room. The banquet hall alone can accommodate up to 300 people. The take-out seafood market from the beginning of the business still remains.

revival social club

A gem in downtown York, the Revival Social Club experience reflects the decor, taste, and atmosphere of restaurants in New York and Philadelphia.
The restaurant offers a complex drinks menu, including a rotating list of craft cocktails and mocktails. The daily dinner menu includes entrees such as mouth-watering braised short ribs, herb-crusted lamb loin, and fish.

Mesa Moreira
58 W. Market St., York
Although it’s only been open for less than a year, Mesa Moreira has made a big impression on York County, bringing us the flavors we’ve been missing.
Before moving to York in 2021, Stephen Moreira grew up in Newark, New Jersey’s Ironbound neighborhood, a neighborhood full of restaurants and bakeries that pay homage to the local immigrant culture. His parents joined the Ironbound people in the 1960s with a wave of Portuguese immigrants.
When Moreira arrived, he met Christy, and the two later married. Through her gourmet travels, Christy discovered the flavors of Portuguese cuisine and fell in love with the atmosphere of the restaurants and the food itself. Mesa Her Moreira opened in July 2023 and has been serving traditional barbecue chicken, Portuguese-style entrees, desserts, and more.

Victor’s Italian Restaurant
554 S. Ogontz St., York
As you step through the door, you’ll hear the soothing sounds of Sinatra’s classic songs. The menu features main dishes such as osso he buco and filet mignon, as well as made-to-order pizzas, appetizers, risotto and pasta.
In 1984, Harold and Eunice Fitzkey purchased a former church building and, according to local legend, named the restaurant after the first chef they hired, one who never showed up for work. Glen Rock Mill Inn

Built in 1837, the Glen Rock Mill Inn has been an integral part of the Glen Rock community, operating as a flour mill, woolen manufacturer, and seed mill for many years.
The mill closed in the 1960s and remained closed for nearly 20 years until it was restored by Cecil and Mary Ann Arttrip. They repurposed the building in his 1984 and turned it into an inn and restaurant. It currently operates as a fine-dining restaurant serving farm-to-table cuisine in the heart of southern York County.
The restaurant has had several owners over the years and is currently owned by Brandon Hufnagel. Mr. Hufnagel began his culinary career at the age of 15 as a restaurant dishwasher. Over time, he became a line cook, graduated from culinary school, and is currently the owner after purchasing the restaurant from the previous owner in 2017.
