The first developer preview build of Android 15 is expected to be released soon, but the next major version of Android is not expected to hit the stable channel until this fall.
Meanwhile, device makers have just started shipping phones with Android 14, which was released a few months ago. And the independent developer behind LineageOS has just released LineageOS 21, the first version of the Android-based operating system built on top of Android 14.
LineageOS isn’t the first Android 14-based custom ROM, but it’s one of the longest-running and most stable, so it’s worth keeping an eye on when developers release major new builds.
Custom Android ROMs are essentially modified versions of the Google operating system that are designed to be installed on phones, tablets, and other devices as a replacement for the software that originally came with them. Among other things, this allows users to install new versions of Android on older phones that are no longer supported by their manufacturers, and to give users more control over the settings and behavior of their devices.
The initial release of LineageOS 21 includes all features of Android 14 and security patches through February 2024.
However, it also includes many features not found in standard Android software, including:
- glimpse is the new default Gallery app for LineageOS with features not available in the Android Open Source Project’s default Gallery2 app.
- of aperture The Camera app supports Material User Design, supports automatic screen rotation, has improved support for QR code scanning, and has added new options and features.
- of jelly The browser app supports per-website location permissions and features user interface updates, supporting materials, and other changes.
- LineageOS developers updated AOSP dialer Apps for which Google has removed support for bug fixes, dark and light themes, supporting materials, etc.
LineageOS 21 images are available for dozens of devices, and you can check if your phone, tablet, or other device is supported on the download page. Please note that you must follow the steps to unlock your device’s bootloader before installing the operating system. Also, as part of the installation process you will be erasing all data from your device, so be sure to back up any import files or data first.
