LineageOS 21 brings Android 14 to more phones and tablets

LineageOS is a community-developed custom Android ROM that delivers a clean, privacy-respecting Android build to dozens of phones and tablets. Lineage team has released his LineageOS 21 based on Android 14.

LineageOS 21 is currently available on a total of 21 devices, including the OnePlus 9, Fairphone 4, and most Google Pixel smartphones (again!). It is based on Android 14, which was released in October last year. Many of the devices supported by LineageOS are no longer updated by their original manufacturers, so LineageOS continues the tradition of keeping older phones and tablets alive and updated. For example, one of the oldest devices on the new list is the LG G5. It was released in February 2016 and had not been officially updated beyond Android 8.0.

However, LineageOS is more than just an Android port. Since Google stopped developing the open source version of his AOSP several years ago, the team has put a lot of effort into the default system apps. This release brings major improvements to the Jelly web browser, dialer, contacts messaging, keyboard, camera, and calculator applications, complete with a Material You-inspired redesign. People who install Google app packages (‘gapps’) probably won’t end up using some of these apps, but it’s great that it’s one of the options for everyone. .

This release includes Glimpse Photo Gallery, a completely new app that replaces the old “Gallery2” AOSP gallery application. “We focus on a clean, simple, and modern-looking UI designed based on Material U guidelines.” The app features UI rotation, photo and video mirroring options, optional audio mute, and HDR video. It’s a great companion to the updated camera app, which now fully supports recording and more.

“Since the release of Android 14 last October, we’ve been working extremely hard to port features to this new version of Android. “Thanks to our hard work to adapt to UI-based changes.” 14’s very simple device launch requirements allowed us to rebase our changes to Android 14 more efficiently. ”

A complete list of supported devices can be found on the LineageOS Wiki (a list of LineageOS 21 specific devices can be found in the source link below). Each device page has installation instructions. We’ll likely see more phones and tablets added to LineageOS 21’s roster in the coming weeks and months.
