iOS 18: Everything we know about the next big iPhone update

thedailyposting.comBy thedailyposting.comFebruary 15, 2024No Comments

[ad_1]

Every year, Apple announces a new version of iOS at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The phone will then go into beta testing (first for developers only, then for the general public) before being released in September, around the time the new iPhones go on sale.

We don’t expect any changes to the process or schedule this year, but that’s about all we can expect to be the same as in past years. When it comes to iOS 18 itself, its features and changes, rumors and leaks suggest it could be one of the most important iPhone software updates in years.

Below is a summary of rumors and leaks, but please note that the final product may not look exactly like what you read here. Information about future Apple products is often unreliable, and even if the information is accurate, plans can change. That said, this is what we think we know so far.

iOS 18 release date: When will iOS 18 be released?

For the past decade or so, new versions of iOS have been released in September, usually in the second or third week. I haven’t heard anything about this year being any different, so here are the release dates for the past five years for reference.

  • iOS 17: September 18, 2023
  • iOS 16: September 12, 2022
  • iOS15: September 20, 2021
  • iOS14: September 16, 2020
  • iOS13: September 19, 2019

Ahead of general release, Apple plans to roll out a developer beta right after the WWDC keynote in June, followed by a public beta in early July. There will be several beta versions with some features added, changed, or removed before the main release in September.

iOS 18 compatibility: Which iPhones will come with iOS 18?

Although we haven’t heard any specific rumors about which devices will be compatible with iOS 18, the general assumption is that all phones with iOS 17 will ship with iOS 18. That means everything up to the iPhone XR and XS, or second-generation iPhones. From the SE to the iPhone 15 and, of course, the iPhone 16 coming this fall. Here is a list of all iPhones that support iOS 17:

  • iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)

Some of the best new features are available on older phones because they lack the necessary hardware (a powerful enough neural engine or GPU to run AI features, or enough RAM). may not be supported. This is a common phenomenon with new iOS releases.

iOS 18 features: Biggest iOS update ever?

Bloomberg’s Mark Garman has reported extensively on the development of iOS 18, writing in his Power On newsletter, “Internally, this new operating system is considered one of the biggest iOS updates in the company’s history, if not the biggest. “There is,” he claimed.

Expect major new features in AI and many ambitious updates and changes beyond just cramming AI into everything.

All-new Siri

The most visible theme of iOS 18 is said to be AI. in particular, driving force While products like ChatGPT, Bard, CoPilot, Dall-E, and Stable Diffusion are taking the tech world by storm, Apple has been slow to bring AI to market.

There is a big movement within Apple to build out its generative AI technology stack, with Apple publishing papers on a number of topics, including a new large-scale language model called Ajax, object references called Ferret, and a new speech recognition model. I’ve seen it. more.

Siri is said to be undergoing a major “generative AI” overhaul, taking it to the next level using new large-scale language models and other advanced AI.

AI everywhere

Siri isn’t the only feature Apple is said to be incorporating new advanced AI into. Although we don’t know all the details yet, Apple is said to be editing to bring advanced AI features to as many products as possible. Apple Music playlist generation is one of the frequently cited areas, as are code generation in Xcode, Pages, Numbers, and his AI capabilities in Keynote.

Apple is expected to take a hybrid approach, running many AI tasks on-device to improve privacy, security, and responsiveness, while employing cloud-based AI for larger tasks that cannot be performed on the iPhone. I am.And there’s reason to believe Apple could tap into the generative AI pool, too.

RCS support

In late 2023, Apple announced what seemed unthinkable: RCS support would be introduced to the iPhone. Yes, Messages is still the default text message lock-in, and no, iMessage isn’t going anywhere. However, if you send him a text message on his other RCS-enabled device, the “green bubble” will be RCS instead of SMS.

catch? Not coming until “late 2024” almost certainly means iOS 18, if not iOS 18.1 or 18.2. Once it arrives, you’ll be able to get read receipts, full-size images and videos, typing indicators, and more when you send messages to others using your Android phone.

Impact of Vision Pro

Apple’s visionOS interface introduces several new interface elements, the most notable being circular home screen icons. According to a rumor from Israeli news site The Verifier, “Apple is working on bringing elements of the Vision Pro glasses’ visionOS operating system into iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 updates.” That could mean big changes to iOS. After all, it’s been more than a decade since iOS 17 saw a major redesign.
