After rumors earlier in the day that the Golden State Warriors were interested in gauging LeBron James’ interest in playing, the 20-time All-Star announced that Stephen Stephen would be interested in teaming up with Team USA. Talking to Callie.
In Wednesday’s episode, first take (h/t terrible announcement), ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said that James and Curry had “actually been thinking about playing together for months” with Steve Kerr as their head coach, adding, “It’s unlikely they’ll play together as a team at this summer’s Paris Olympics.” It’s about playing with USA.”
First, this doesn’t rise to the same level as “Why would they do that?”, but this does suggest that there’s something going on between James and Curry about playing together in the NBA. It was Windhorst’s dramatic, expert-level reading to make people wonder if this was the case.
It shouldn’t be too surprising that James and Curry are likely to play for the United States this summer. Both superstars were included in the initial 28-man roster announced on January 23rd.
In September, The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Joe Vardon reported that James was “ready to commit” to Team USA and would “effectively invite multiple stars to join.” Curry was on that list.
Kerr was hired as USA Basketball’s head coach in December 2021 after serving as an assistant on Gregg Popovich’s 2020 team.
Team USA will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing fourth place finish at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
If James ends up playing for the United States, it will be his first Olympic appearance since 2012. He won three consecutive Olympic medals in 2004, 2008 and 2012, including two consecutive gold medals.
Curry has never played for the United States in an Olympics. He was scheduled to join the 2016 team, but his knee and ankle injuries forced him to withdraw from the team.
