It’s been an eventful week in men’s basketball, with the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll predicting the usual changes, but the top two teams appear to be pulling away from the rest.
Connecticut and Purdue once again dominated first-place votes after a week of dominant performances. The defending champion Huskies held the lead with 24 of 32, while the second-place Boilermakers won the remaining eight. Houston moves into third place.
The voting was close, with only 12 voting points separating the next four places. While North Carolina fell to fifth place after a midweek loss to Clemson, the hot market moved up three spots to fourth place. Arizona State moved up two spots from her to No. 6, and Kansas State dropped from her No. 4 to No. 7.

The Badgers have lost four straight and dropped 12 spots, while the Wildcats have lost three straight at home and dropped five spots.
Indiana State enters the survey at No. 24, the Sycamores’ first ranking since the historic 1979 season. St. Mary’s University moved up again in 19th place. Oklahoma State tied with Wisconsin for 21st place, while 23rd place Virginia and 25th place Colorado State also regained spots in the rankings.
This week’s five eliminations include three Mountain West contenders: Utah State, San Diego State and New Mexico State. Florida Atlantic and Texas Tech also lost.
