Google Photos doesn’t have unlimited storage, but you can back up and save your photos, videos, and memories so you don’t have to save them to your phone’s local storage. However, since your photos are uploaded to the cloud, you generally won’t be able to see them on your phone unless you actually open the Google Photos application. That is about to change.
Now, Google has added a feature to the photo picker that lets you actually view images stored in cloud apps like Google Photos. Access both local and backup photos without switching apps, streamlining the process of selecting images and videos. Cloud storage albums are easily available within the photo picker, making it much easier to organize and search your media, especially if you frequently offload images and videos to the cloud.
This feature isn’t limited to Google Photos, at least in theory. Any cloud media app eligible for the pilot program is eligible. This means OneDrive, Dropbox, and other cloud storage services with photo backup may support the same functionality. Google Photos will be the first Google app to appear, but the pilot program is also open to other non-Google apps before possibly opening up the API to everyone. I hope this feature isn’t shut down permanently, as there are some niche services like NextCloud that could benefit from this.
One problem here is that you need to update your application to use the latest photo picker. This enables cloud storage integration and other features. Some applications have already been updated, such as Chrome and other Google applications, but many others have not migrated yet. The new cloud photo integration may help push applications to use the new picker, but in the meantime, you may no longer see this picker in your favorite apps.
The new cloud storage integration will roll out to all devices running Android 12 or later in the February Google System Update. Modern photo pickers technically work on Android 4.4 and above as long as the application switches to Android 4.4 and above, but the cloud integration doesn’t work on anything that old.
