First developer preview “scheduled for February 15th”

This time last year, we were already enjoying the benefits of Android Upside Down Cake (aka Android 14), with Google releasing the first developer preview build on February 8th. So there was reason to believe that Google’s next major OS update, Android 15, would be released. It is expected to appear in the near future, but that time will probably come sooner rather than later.
As spotted by 9to5Google, a comment posted by a Google engineer on the AOSP commit page indicates that Android 15’s “first developer preview is scheduled for February 15th.” That is, this Thursday. The comments refer to this release as Android V, but we know that Android 15’s code name will be Vanilla Ice Cream, so it all adds up.
Googlers have censored their names here to avoid scandal, but as of this writing the post is still visible on the Android open source project page, with code commits and comments publicly available. Published for review.
If Android 15 DP1 is released on Thursday, it is expected to be available to Google Pixel devices first as a set of image files that need to be flashed manually, rather than being installed as a system update in Settings. Since this is a developer preview, it is intended for the app maker or his OEM to test compatibility with new versions of the software, and easy installation is not a priority.
