Google is officially rolling out support for Google Photos and other cloud backup apps in the Android photo picker.
In Android 13, the redesigned system photo picker was simply a “gateway to your local media library.” Google now allows users to access photos stored in the cloud from the same sheet-based UI. “Backed up photos (also known as ‘cloud photos’) are merged with your local photos in the photo picker, so switch between apps. ”
The first time you use it, Google displays a “Cloud Photos is now available” banner explaining the new feature.
This updated Android photo picker now displays cloud albums in their own tabs, with Favorites prominently displayed. It will be officially rolled out in his February 2024 Google System Update for Android 12 and newer devices.
Google Photos is the first Android app to support the new picker feature, but the API is being rolled out to any cloud media app as part of a pilot program. Google recommends that apps that use custom photo pickers upgrade to Android services.
If multiple cloud media apps are available on your device, Android will automatically select the cloud media app, but you can “change or remove the selected cloud media app at any time in Photo Picker settings” from the overflow menu. .
