Google is bringing companion mode, previously limited to Nest Hub Max and web client, to iOS and Android starting this week. Companion mode is designed to allow in-person participants to use virtual tools in a hybrid meeting.
This feature is intended for use in large hybrid meeting situations. This type of setup often includes enterprise conference room hardware that handles things like audio and video for the entire room. However, this hardware does not allow in-person attendees to access virtual meeting features such as reactions, messages, and raise hand.
Companion mode on mobile devices provides all of these features and more to in-person meeting participants when using Google Meet. In addition to the aforementioned features, companion mode provides captions and subtitles for speakers, and the ability to zoom in on viewable content.
To use companion mode, users must create a new Use companion mode Button on the pre-participation screen. Selecting this option automatically mutes the user’s audio and video. Google recommends using conference room hardware to avoid audio feedback caused by multiple active microphones in the room.
The company says mobile companion mode makes sense in places where it’s inconvenient to use the feature on a laptop.
This feature is currently rolling out to both Google Workspace users and personal Google account holders. However, depending on your school or workplace’s Google Workspace platform release schedule, companion mode may take several weeks to become available.
Immediate release domains will begin taking advantage of this feature on Monday (February 12), but full rollout may take up to 15 days. Domains with scheduled releases will not have access to companion mode until February 27th at the earliest, and may have to wait up to an additional 15 days after that.
iOS requires version 229 Google Meet or version 2024.01.28 Gmail later versions. For Android, version 225.0 Google Meet or version 6.0.231231 Google Meet or later versions.
