The latest data shows that the reputation of universities in the Arab region has skyrocketed, particularly regionally. The World reputation rankings have been announced.

An analysis of the rankings, based on the world’s largest invitation-only poll of academics, shows that the vote share for universities in the Arab region has risen sharply since 2021. At universities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the number was nine times higher. The increase in vote share over this period was three times as large in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, suggesting that universities in these countries are gaining recognition in academic circles.

As a result, the ranking of Arab universities in the 2023 reputation table, which publishes only the world’s top 200 universities, has significantly improved.

Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed bin Fahd University moved up from 176-200 to 101-125, while two other Saudi universities, three UAE universities and one Lebanese university entered the top 200 for the first time. .

However, the rapid rise in the reputation of Arab universities is primarily a regional rather than a global trend.

According to the data, an average of 70.6 percent of votes for Arab universities came from academics based in the region itself.

This is in contrast to North American universities, where only 34.3% of votes came from the United States and Canada, reflecting the university’s far-flung prestige.

The survey received responses from 38,796 academics. Academics were asked to name up to 15 universities that they considered to be the best for both research and teaching in their fields.

Miguel Antonio Lim, senior lecturer in education and international development at the University of Manchester, said the results suggested that Arab universities’ reputation management was more “effective” in the region.

“They can now communicate their research results in a more impactful way within their local communities,” he says.

According to Nadia Badrawi, President of the Arab Network for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ANQAHE), the use of Arabic as a medium of instruction in Arab educational institutions has limited the scope for its reputation to be translated around the world. It is also said that it is restricted.

However, she said the Arab region is at the beginning of an era in which institutions will step up their efforts to submit rankings and apply for quality assurance certifications, which will help increase their visibility and reputation.

“Fifteen years ago, most universities had no real quality assurance. 1707806062 We want other countries to see what we have,” she explained.

Internationalization efforts are also progressing like never before, she said. From dual degrees to branch schools, investments were being made to internationalize regional institutions.

The rise in reputation rankings by Arab universities was similar, although less pronounced, in other growth markets such as Africa and South America. In contrast, long-standing higher education hubs such as North America saw only modest improvements compared to the previous year.

Dr Lim said the reputational performance revealed in the rankings is “relative, not absolute” and that the rising prestige of institutions in Arab countries suggests a declining prestige of more established systems. He said it was not a thing.

He added that the Arab region is an example of institutions growing simultaneously in knowledge production and reputation management.
