As weekly supermarket prices soar, an Australian mother has launched a free app to save her family hundreds of dollars on groceries and reduce food waste.

“Any little bit of cash would be helpful,” said Melbourne mother Claire, who has two young children, mortgage repayments and supermarket bills going up.

“We’re just trying to juggle everything from the standpoint that we’re really short on time and we’re really feeling the pinch,” Claire said. Yahoo Finance.

“My husband and I both earn a good salary, but we still don’t have much left at the end of the month, and we don’t have any emergency funds to cover unexpected expenses.”

Claire started using the app Saveful in November last year and said it had completely changed the way she looked at the food she bought. The app allows users to connect what they currently have in their kitchen or pantry and generate dozens of recipes based on those ingredients.

“I used to be so shocked to look in the fridge on Sundays and see how much I was throwing up. Now I find it’s a lot less,” Claire said. He noted that fruits and vegetables are often a problem.

“My behavior before was to go and grab the pieces.” [at the supermarket] Spend $60, $70 on some items. Now I’m thinking more about staple items and trying to integrate the store more. ”

Mom has already saved $170 on her grocery bill just by using the app. She also stopped buying her take-out items for her family, which made her even more frugal.

“If you add those up each week, it’s probably at least $60 a week,” Claire said. “Convenience allows you to pick up takeout for your family. It’s equally convenient to throw a quick meal together with what you already have while you wait for the food to arrive.” ”

As a busy mother, Claire said she also likes the fact that she doesn’t have to worry about deciding what to make for dinner.

The two ended up making tacos using cos lettuce, canned tomatoes, soft tacos, and leftover cheese.

“At the end of a busy day, the last thing you want to do is get creative when it comes to putting food on the table,” she said.

“With Saveful, you can literally open your fridge, type in what’s in there, and get inspired by it. It’s about making that one level of decision-making while saving coins.”

Claire decided to start pickling cucumbers and onions to ensure she used up all the ingredients she bought.

“I’ve learned about a lot of substitutions I didn’t know I could use. They help me use up ingredients that would otherwise go in the trash,” she said.

Grocery costs are a major stress factor

Almost half of Australian households say grocery bills are one of their major financial stressors, with the average household currently spending $188 a week on groceries.

Half of shoppers (53%) buy in bulk to save money, 61% visit multiple grocery stores to save money, and 38% use coupons.
